Eichler homes obtained their eponymous name from Joseph Eichler, a California Modern building developer, whose designs were informed by modernist architects Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. While the San Francisco Bay Area has numerous Eichler homes, Sunnyvale, the location of this home improvement project, is the birthplace of this unique California Modern style home. With over 1000 Eichler homes, the City of Sunnyvale offers specific Eichler design guidelines, to both protect the Eichler design aesthetic and to ensure privacy for neighboring homes.
